Manchester City vs Liverpool ( English Premier League ) 23 August 2010

Manchester City 3 Liverpool 0

Manchester City registered their biggest win over Liverpool since 1937 with a quite brutal display at Eastlands.
A superb debut from James Milner included the pass to set up Gareth Barry for City's first and the corner Micah Richards headed on for the goal Carlos Tevez claimed, before the Argentina striker added a third from the spot.
As neither side managed to win their opening fixture, there was another intriguing sub-plot as Roberto Mancini and Roy Hodgson looked for their first league victories of what are supposed to be new eras at Eastlands and Anfield.
That City owner Sheikh Mansour chose the match to be the first occasion he would watch the team he has invested £1billion in, just added to the heightened sense of expectation.
It was one of the expensive purchases, Joleon Lescott, who slid in to deny Fernando Torres an early sight of goal.
Martin Skrtel was booked shortly afterwards for needlessly chopping Adam Johnson down by the touchline.
The contest was fairly open and David Ngog had a shot comfortably saved by Joe Hart before Johnson flashed a long-range effort narrowly wide at the other end.
City maintained that offensive, with Milner in particular impressing with his raw pace.
When the midfielder advanced beyond Steven Gerrard, Johnson picked him out with an excellent sliderule pass.
Milner quickly cut the ball back to Gareth Barry, who calmly sidefooted the ball past Jose Reina to put City in front.
Skipper Carlos Tevez nearly doubled the advantage when he raced on to Yaya Toure's through-ball, only to crash his shot into the side-netting.
Barry fired another effort wide as City maintained their offensive and Liverpool started to struggle to gain any meaningful possession.
Tevez produced a brilliant turn to get round Jamie Carragher but then found Daniel Agger in his way.
Dirk Kuyt then went through the back of Lescott as Liverpool's frustrations increased, Skrtel powering Milner's cross away from Tevez.
Agger then climbed above Toure to prevent the former Barcelona man reaching Lescott's deep cross to the far post.
On a rare Liverpool foray forward, Agger drove a long-range shot way over the bar.
deflected wide
Micah Richards headed a Glen Johnson cross away from danger and when Gerrard gifted Milner possession, City countered at speed and Johnson fired another shot into the side-netting.
Tevez turned inside Lucas but his shot struck Carragher and deflected wide for a corner that Richards glanced wide.
Toure got his first taste of English football's physical side when Skrtel clattered into him.
Torres presented Gerrard with Liverpool's best chance a minute before the break but from the edge of the area, the Reds skipper fired disappointingly wide.
Torres tried to set Ngog racing through the centre of City's defence but Lescott came across to clear.
Lucas only just failed to collect Ngog's pass into the penalty area and for the first time, there were murmurings of discontent from the City faithful.
But the criticisms soon turned to cheers again after Johnson had won his team a corner.
Milner took it, swinging the ball out to Richards, who powered a header towards goal.
Tevez got the faintest touch as he tried to turn it in. It was enough to deceive Reina and Glen Johnson couldn't keep it out, even with his hand.
Gerrard had a shot deflected over as Liverpool tried desperately to find a way back into the contest, then he thudded a shot against a post, with Hart beaten after Richards had been booked for bringing down Torres.
Liverpool kept the pressure up though and Ngog brought a brilliant save out of Hart, although the one to deny Torres from the follow-up was even better as he beat away a fierce strike from close range with his left hand.
It proved to be a pivotal moment as midway through the half, City got a third.
Skrtel argued that he did not foul Johnson. But contact inside the area to a player already tumbling thanks to Agger's earlier challenge was enough to warrant the decision from referee Phil Dowd.
Tevez did the rest, sending Reina the wrong way.
Torres was still striving for that elusive goal but after turning Richards, he again fired wide.
It proved to be his last meaningful involvement before he was replaced by Ryan Babel, who quickly brought another excellent save out of Hart.
